A visit to DKC Toastmasters Club

On the 17th of December 2007, we visited DKC TMC at Uptown, Damansara. Lukreiza completed her 9th assignment speech from the competent communication manual. Julian, Hui Shan and Syah were also present to give their moral support. The TME was Dennis Wee, ACS and the Table Topics Master was Sock Mei.

Since Christmas was just around the corner, DKC TMC chose 'A Wonderful Christmas Is having A Happy Family Wrapped Up With One Another' as the theme for the meeting. The word of the day was 'messiah'. At the end of the meeting, we exchanged gifts. We were also 'fascinated' by the mezmerizing Christmas tree ;)

Lukreiza attempted to persuade the audience to save energy with her speech entitled 'Save energy, save money, save the planet'. The speech was followed by a very comprehensive evaluation by the assignment speech evaluator, Tham Chee Wah, DTM.

We look forward to visit DKC Toastmasters Club again as we truly enjoyed the meeting and it also gives us the opportunity to get to know fellow Toastmasters from other clubs.

Boring Presentations-- Six ways to avoid giving them

“If you are just going to read me the slides, why do I need to be here?" *yawns*

Did you know that it is really very easy to ruin a perfectly good presentation with PowerPoint? Powerpoint and other popular presentation software can be a powerful communication tool if used properly but they could also put even the best audience to sleep.

No speaker wants to be boring—not even a tiny bit. Nevertheless, boring speeches, business presentations and classroom lectures happen. All too often, they happen. Maybe you can’t avoid listening to them but fortunately, you can avoid giving boring presentations. These tips by Chris King can help you to be a better presenter!

Work on vocal variety! I realize that “nerves” can cause dry mouth and the tendency to talk in a monotone, but this can be deadly. If we take time to look different audience members in the eye and speak to them as if in a one-to-one conversation, we will sound more natural.

Lighten up! Add a bit of humor. I am not suggesting starting the presentation with a joke. I am suggesting that in the field of computers, technology, and every type of business there are lots of true and humorous anecdotes that would elicit laughter and get audience members on your side. Laughter will also ease a presenter’s tension.

Don’t tell us everything you know! Content is incredibly important, however, as presenters we must not feel that we have to pack everything we know into one presentation. Usually covering three main points/topics is sufficient for a dynamic presentation. An effective speaker leaves an audience wanting to find out more -- not overwhelmed by the amount of material covered.

Use props with care! It is fine to use props, including digitally generated slides and visuals. However, when we rely on these for our presentation -- for example, reading what audience members can see already -- we lose their attention quickly. Also, boring visuals with lots of words and no graphics are a complete turnoff.

Involve the audience! Besides getting the audience to laugh and feel that we are talking directly to them, we can ask them questions and also encourage them to ask us questions or make comments on our statements. Having everyone write down what they want to learn and then asking a few participants to share what they have written is one way to elicit involvement from the start.

Prepare, prepare, prepare and practice, practice, practice! The more prepared we are, the more comfortable and enthusiastic we will be when presenting. I am not advocating memorizing, but I am suggesting that we have mapped out our direction, tested our stories, and practiced a strong opening and closing.

Work on all of these, and I guarantee, you’ll never, never, never be boring!

Remember, however, that there is a difference between spoken words appropriate for the ear and formally written words intended for reading. Terminate your presentation with an interesting remark or an appropriate punch line. Leave your listeners with a positive impression and a sense of completion.

All the best!

-Final Meeting of the Semester-

Demo speech by Kuang Shan, CC

It has come to the end of the August 2008 semester and so...our final meeting ended with a little surprise for our darling (Si Jelita according to our Area Governor Meyya,ACG) Lukreiza!!!Yes,we had a belated birthday cake for our VPPR!!!Now,now...let's get back to the main topic...Ahem...

Below were the role players on Tuesday(28/10/2008):

TME: Syahiran, TM
SAA:Syahiran, TM
TTM:Julian Gan, CC
TTE:Lai Lien,CC
Ah-Counter:Amir,TM
Time-keeper:Sara,TM
Grammarian:Lukreiza,TM
Assignment Speakers: Hui Shan,TM (Assignment #8)
Lukreiza,TM (Assignment #8)
Syahiran,TM (Assignment #10)
Demo Speech:Kuang Shan, CC (Interpretive Reading)
Assignment Evaluators: 1) Julian Gan,CC
2) Jess Foong,CC
3) Kuang Shan,CC
General Evaluator:Lai Lien,CC

Besides Lukreiza's delicious cake ;-) Our dearest President (CC Julian Gan) marvelled us with his tricks during the table topics session (phew!) He made our poor volunteers lie like they never did before...lie as if they were the greatest pretender in the world. Our table topic speakers were Jess Foong CC,Amir TM,Lai Lien CC.These three speakers kept the audiences entertained with our tummies aching throughout their lies about beauty, intelligence and strength.

Next, the assignment speakers filled the room with different environments because of the various topics presented. Hui Shan, TM presented her 8th assignment speech with the title,"Halloween".Her speech was illustrated with colourful slides and Kuang Shan, CC managed to nab the grand prize the her question and received a candy cane!!!Hooray! The others were not left out as she gave them candies due to the spirit of Halloween.

Well,well...Lukreiza, TM made the environment change by presenting about "Calvin & Hobbes".Those who were familiar with the comic were so excited, making the others anxious to know what it is all about. Her speech gave us an insight about Calvin who is more than just a child, but a boy bursting with energy and wonderful imaginations - making his stuffed toy tiger(Hobbes) into an imagination friend. She managed to make us feel enlightened, touched and happy all at the same time.Everyone in the room was impressed with Lukreiza's performance and the effort she put in to make her slides beautiful.

Ladies and gentleman, let us all say Congratulations to Syah as he has completed his Competent Communicator Manual by presenting his 10th speech, "Perserverence".An inspiring speech about his previous struggles as a person, making the crowd hooked on, to discover more about his story. The speech was one that would make a person think more than twice to give up,as we should perservere to succeed in life.Other than that,he shared with us his embarassments and failures, letting us know that nothing stopped him from becoming one of the top students and a talented Toastmasters.Congratulations again to Syah for now he is a Competent Communicator !!!!!Yes, he can definitely join Julian...CC...Hmm...

The Demo speech by Kuang Shan, CC was very energetic and also persuasive. The speech was originally written and spoken by one of the most known President of the United States, J.F Kennedy. Kuang Shan showed us that reading from a piece of paper, needs more effort to illustrate the emotions of the script with voice colouring skills and appropriate hand gestures. Even though the speech was very political, none of us felt sleepy or bored because it was delivered in an excellent manner.Thank You Kuang Shan for giving us an insight of what Interpertive Reading is all about.

Finally,I would like to thank Lai Lien,CC for coming all the way from DKC to our humble club meeting. It is her very first time to join our meeting and we appreciate her constructive feedback that will help us to be more efficient when we conduct the meeting. We were lucky to have her because of her generosity in multitasking by being both the Table Topics Evaluator and also the General Evaluator.

Thank You again to all the members who came and guests who joined us this past Tuesday.Till then, our next meeting shall be during the next January semester 2009.Please continue to drop by our blog for updates about our Club's Toastmasters Competition year 2009.

All the best for the final exams!!!!!!

On the 16th of September, Tuesday a few of our members landed at the doorstep of the PJ Hilton's Club. One of them, TM Lukreiza managed to do her 7th assignment speech and earned good comments from her evaluator, none other than the funny and witty ACB, CL Stephen Fernando. Her speech was interesting and memorable as it has much to do with our handwriting, forcing everyone present on that day to re-evaluate their own writing. Lukreiza must have made an impression in the meeting.

On the other hand, another group of us visited the Universiti Malaya Toastmasters Club. The declaration of holiday for Selangor did us good on the 17th September,Wednesday. It was an interesting day to remembered as the theme on that day was Acronym, making it all shorter to complete a sentence. CC Julian Gan from our club was the GE (General Evaluator), while Hui Shan volunteered for their Table Topics Session. The word of the day suited the crowd really well - a rambunctious bunch of people.

We hope that other clubs will drop by and join us for our future meetings =)
